Kampung Jambu and Kampung Mentua, Tumpat, Kelantan
15 to 16 May 2008

The areas near the border separating Malaysia and Thailand are well-established smuggling hotspots, not just for wildlife, but various contraband items going in and out of Malaysia. For years, the authorities have invested efforts in the area, and while many illegal shipments have been successfully intercepted, rarely, if ever, have the ringleaders of these operations been nabbed.

The programmes was a joint project with the Department of Wildlife and National Parks and WWF-Malaysia, and assisted by Persatuan Sahabat Sungai Nenggiri.

MYCAT returns to Grik, Perak
29 April - 2 May 2009

Poaching and illegal trade are major threats to wildlife all over the world. News of confiscated animals – dead and alive – appear in the media more often. While such enforcement action is a major priority for the authorities – there is also a need to tackle the root of the problem.

Long-term outreach programmes at hotspots for poaching and trade are preventive in nature. Reinforcement of conservation messages over a period of time is necessary first, for retention of the information and then, possibly for action or change in attitude.

Tackling the problem of consumption of endangered wildlife in the city

13, 15 and 18 May 2009

Malaysian wild animals are under grave threat from poaching and smuggling. The continued large-scale harvest and massacre of numerous species connue in the forests, driven by the seemingly unstoppable demand for butchered and processed wildlife. While people who poach wild animals don’t live in the city, people who consume them do. People who desire ‘exotic’ meat and tradional medicines made from endangered species are the reason why so many animals are removed from their natural habitat and killed.
